Change grade basis

NOTICE: Due to Covid-19, the University has provided more flexibility in selecting your grade basis. More information is available in the spring and summer 2021 grading and withdrawal exceptions fact sheet and advising considerations.

View or change a grade basis

To view or change the current grade basis for your classes, go to MyU: Academics (see step-by-step instructions).

Before you decide whether to change a grade basis, consider potential impacts on financial aid, graduate or professional school applications, and/or eligibility for scholarships. Talk with your Student Success Coach to determine potential impacts. More information is available in the spring and summer 2021 grading and withdrawal exceptions fact sheet and advising considerations.

Choosing a grade basis

You may take a course under A-F or S/N (i.e. "pass/fail") grading bases, or you may Audit a course for no grade. In many cases, you can choose your grade basis when you register, but some courses limit the options available.

The University policy states that you cannot take major courses with an S/N grading basis, unless a particular course required by your major is only offered with an S/N grading basis. However, there are exceptions for S/N grades and withdrawal due to Covid-19.

Exceptions due to Covid-19

Due to Covid-19, there is some flexibility in selecting your grade basis. More information is available about spring and summer 2021 grading and withdrawal exceptions.

  • You may count classes taken under S/N grade basis for graduation and program requirements so long as you would have earned a grade that would have met those requirements under an A-F grade basis.
    • Colleges or programs may request the A-F grades that you earned to make decisions about progress in the major or secondary admissions.
  • The number of S/N credits that you earn in fall 2020, spring 2021, and summer 2021 will not count towards the cap of S/N credits allowed for your major.
  • A notation on your transcript for fall 2020 through summer 2021 will state:
    • “Due to COVID-19 pandemic, Satisfactory/Not Satisfactory grading permitted for many classes and degree requirements.”

We strongly encourage you to take time to evaluate your progress in your classes and speak with your Student Success Coach before making a decision about A-F or S/N grading options.
